The Old Stories

Scripture, myth, and literature.

Morris took his degree in theater, helped found the Trinity Repertory Theatre in Providence, Rhode Island, and read widely and constantly. He was drawn to the old narratives, working from the Hebrew Bible, Greek myth, Shakespeare, and the American canon. The figures in these stories return in his work as they return in life — the exile, the ruined king, the son who becomes his father — not illustrated but re-staged, as they are encountered again by each generation: enduring roles played by different faces.
